European Research Area Forum releases guidelines on responsible use of generative AI in research
The European Commission (EC), in cooperation with the European Research Area (ERA), has published a set of guidelines to support the responsible use of generative AI in the European research community. The guidelines address the opportunities and challenges posed by the rapid proliferation of AI technologies and provides recommendations based on the principles of integrity in research. They emphasize that researchers should be mindful of the limitations of plagiarism, sensitive information leakage, and AI bias when using AI tools, refrain from using AI in sensitive activities, and that institutions and funders monitor and support the responsible use of AI. The EC hopes the guidelines will become an important reference point for research in Europe and will be updated based on ongoing feedback. The guidelines can be downloaded from the EC's website.
