- Transitioning to a next-generation bibliographic structure -
On April 29, the National Library of Korea (Chief Executive Suh Hye Ran) published a research paper on the application of uniform titles with a goal of transitioning to a next-generation bibliographic structure through the National Library of Korea Issue Paper No. 10.

This Issue Paper examines the functions of uniform titles in library catalogs and describes in detail the process through which the NLK introduced uniform titles into its systems. It also explains the guidelines established to create uniform title authority records in a standardized format, the system screen design that catalogers use for authority records, and other information that libraries require if they wish to use uniform titles in their cataloguing.
A uniform title refers to a title selected to bring together in a catalog all the different titles if a particular work is known by multiple titles. For example, 엄마를 부탁해 by Shin Kyung-sook has been called by several different titles in different languages, including Pidä huolta äidistä; Prosim, pazi na mamo; Please Look After Mom; and 母をお願い. In this case, 엄마를 부탁해 was made the uniform title and the other titles were placed under it.
Authority record refers to a record created to manage and apply the author name, title, series title, and subject used in the catalog in a consistent manner.
“Creating authority records for uniform titles, which are key elements in identifying works, is essential in maximizing discovery and transitioning to a next-generation bibliographic structure. We will continue to work to ensure the stable establishment of uniform title authority records, including revising the guidelines. We encourage more libraries to introduce uniform titles into their cataloguing practice,” said an NLK official.
Published online in a PDF format, the National Library of Korea Issue Paper features recent trends and policy issues for libraries. It can be freely accessed on the NLK website
