About the Project

Korean old and rare collection digitization project searches and locates Korean old and rare collections held in overseas libraries. Once located, materials are collected and digitized to be added to the national collection and utilized as primary resources for researchers.

Since the beginning of the project in 1982, Korean old and rare collections held in Japan, China, Taiwan and France have been duplicated and collected in microforms; since 2006, rare collections in the holdings of the Harvard-Yenching Library, Library of Congress, and the Columbia University Library have been digitized and collected as well.

The image files and their bibliographic information of the collections can be viewed in the National Library of Korea’s Korean Old and Rare Collection Information System. (KORCIS, www.nl.go.kr/korcis/)

The National Library of Korea plays a key role in overseas Korean old and rare collections studies by actively researching, digitizing, and performing valuation on old and rare Korean books, manuscripts, and maps.
