The Ajung Municipal Library in Jeonju City launched a free book delivery service for pregnant women and the parents/caretakers of babies in 2021.
Since then, local residents have enthusiastically responded to this “parenting with books” delivery service. According to the library, both the number of subscribers to the service and the number of loans has significantly increased.
The library came up with the idea two years ago as a means to serve pregnant women and the caretakers of young children, who may struggle to find time to visit physical libraries.
Subscribers can use the service up to twice per month, applying for book deliveries and return pickups on the library website between 9 am and 5 pm any day except Mondays and public holidays. They can borrow up to ten books at a time for a period of 30 days from the date of application.
As of last year, the service had 150 subscribers and 2,172 books had been borrowed. The number has greatly increased this year. As of late October, a total of 227 subscribers had borrowed 2,611 books. Compared to last year, these numbers are increases of 51% and 20%, respectively.
According to a survey conducted in June, the user satisfaction rate was 91%. While the service is currently limited to women who are seven months or more pregnant or the caretakers of babies aged 12 months or younger, the city plans to expand the service to include all pregnant women.
