In celebration of its 76th anniversary, the National Library of Korea (CEO Seo Hye Ran) hosted a cooperative seminar at the library’s International Conference Room at 2 pm on October 26, 2021. In addition, a ceremony was held to award prizes to 43 individuals and organizations in recognition of their contributions to library services. Shin Ki-nam, Chair of the Presidential Committee on Library and Information Policy, Hyun Jin Kwon, Chief Librarian of the National Assembly Library, and Yu Sang-jae, President of the Supreme Court Library, all sent congratulatory messages. The celebratory event was kept to a minimal scale in-person due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It was only attended physically by the recipients of the awards, but the event was shared worldwide on the library’s YouTube channel.

This year, the NLK reached 13 million items in its collection. This 76th anniversary is particularly meaningful as the process for constructing the Data Preservation Center has been officially launched. As a reminder of the library’s mission to store and preserve national literature, the Librarian’s Journal, the book in which the early librarians at the NLK kept records of their daily work, was presented to the public for the first time.

The celebratory event included a special lecture by Jeong Eun-wu, Director of the Planning and Innovation Center at University Tomorrow on the theme of How to keep up with Millennials and Gen Z: Five trendy keywords. The awards were given to the best practices selected for this year, including the case of cooperation between local bookstores, publishers, and public libraries; a case of cooperation of a school librarian with classes on environmental issues; and library marketing using gamification*

“This event is to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the National Library of Korea and to acknowledge the efforts of those who have strived for the advancement of the library community and library services. I’m convinced that we can strengthen our country’s library infrastructure by sharing our accumulated experiences, knowledge, and skills,” said CEO Suh Hye Ran.

‣ Gamification refers to a strategic attempt to introduce game-design elements into other areas for such purposes as disseminating knowledge, motivating and engaging users, and marketing.
